Abstract |
Presentation, delivered at the Africa Studies Centre in Leiden, focusing on South Africa's relationship with Africa, with the "quiet diplomacy" on Zimbabwe as case study. The consensual position among academic foreign-policy commentators is that South Africa’s foreign policy was in an early phase largely shaped by 'idealist' human-rights perspectives, but it has changed to a more pragmatic and indeed narrow definition of national interest as well as a growing commitment to multilateral approaches. It will examine Zimbabwe as a case study to test the validity of such an argument. Tom Lodge is a political scientist at Wits University.
