Author Feltoe, Geoffrey
Edition PDF
Published Harare
Year 2003-08-11
Pages 24
Abstract This paper outlines the way in which basic freedoms and the rule of law have been subverted in Zimbabwe. It describes the ways in which aspects of the legal, judicial and security systems in the country have been distorted. The current modus operandi in the judiciary, prosecution service, militia, CIO (Central Intelligence Organisation), police force, military and prison service are described, as are the ways in which these will have to be re-constituted as professional services. Detailed descriptions of a number of cases involving extra-judicial killing, torture, deportation and detention are included in the appendices. 'Paper produced for "Civil Society and Justice in Zimbabwe" Symposium, Johannesburg, Aug. 11-13, 2003.
