Abstract |
The 2002 Zimbabwean presidential election was without doubt the most highly contested, if not the most violent since independence election of 1980. The election also had the longest campaign period which begun soon after the June 2000 parliamentary elections. This report documents the structured and organised political violence and intimidation; the fast tracking of draconion legislation; the partiality of Registrar-General of Elections and the Election Directorate; the chaotic polling in urban areas and the non-accreditation of ZESN observers; the final results and local, regional and international assessments; and the continuing repressive climate in the post-election period. Given these circumstances, ZESN recommends a re-run of the presidential elections.
