Title   Zimbabwe's 2005 elections: overture or finale?

Serial ISS situation report
Abstract There are three election scenarios. The most likely: ZANU-PF wins overwhelmingly, possibly a two-third parliamentary majority that would allow it to change the constitution and arrange for Mugabe a ceremonious presidency and a gracious exit in 2008 with security guarantees. Most unlikely is a large victory for the opposition MDC - which would lead to a hung parliament, or, worse, could plunge the country into a spiral of unprecedented violence. In the third scenario the MDC retains the parliamentary seats it already has - and nothing changes. In that case, the MDC further looses its political significance, and eventually, will give way to some other new political formation.
