Open letter to Mbeki

An open letter in South African newspaper Mail and Guardian urges president Mbeki to change his strategy on Zimbabwe.

South African president Thabo Mbeki should intensify his efforts to put pressure on the Zimbabwean government to end the continuing violation of human rights, according to an open letter to the president that was published in the South African newspaper Mail & Guardian on Friday 25 June.

The letter, an initiative of Amnesty International, was co-signed by Zimbabwe Watch, and by many human rights and civil society organisations from a.o. South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The signers believe that African states, including South Africa, need to make openly clear to the Zimbabwean government that the ongoing violation of human rights in Zimbabwe is unacceptable. They find that quiet diplomacy has not proven to be a useful strategy, and think that a situation as serious as the crisis in Zimbabwe, asks for stonger measures.
