African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights

Established by the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights which came into force on 21 October 1986 after its adoption in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1981 by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights is charged with ensuring the promotion and protection of Human and Peoples' Rights throughout the African Continent.

African Legal Aid

Africa Legal Aid (AFLA) was launched in Maastricht, the Netherlands in 1995. Since the establishment of Africa Legal Aid, many activities have been undertaken to give recognition to human rights protection in Africa, including fund raising, lobbying and human rights education as well as submitting cases to the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (www.achpr.org).
