NiZA's Human Rights & Peace Building Programme

NiZA's Human Rights and Peace Building Programme wants to support organisations that raise people’s awareness of their human rights and help claim them. Also, NiZA commits itself to those organisations that try to control unstable political situations and monitor conflicts.

NiZA’s Human Rights programme focuses on two themes:

  • Access to justice
  • Peace building

Access to justice
NiZA aims to support initiatives that assist persons in the region to enforce their civil, political and social-economic rights. When people become more aware of their inalienable rights and when they are able to legally claim these rights, this will stimulate and strengthen the democratisation process of the country.

Also, NiZA supports organisations that commit themselves to monitoring and reporting human rights violations.

Strategy
  • To improve legal advice to disadvantaged communities
  • To strengthen small community-based organisations in order to provide advice to local and other administrative officials (military, police, lawyers, magistrates and judges)
  • To develop national lobby strategies
  • To promote dialogue between government and civil society
  • To stimulate contacts between organisations on national, regional and international level
  • To involve citizens in government policy concerning human rights
  • To strengthen partner organisations.

    Peace building
NiZA supports organisations with activities directed at national reconciliation and peace building. Nearly everywhere in southern Africa, the issue of peace building, national reconciliation and conflict prevention is topical. NiZA wants to support these organisations by training them in negotiation strategies.

NiZA's Human Rights programma will co-operate with organisations that are involved in conflict monitoring.

    Strategy
  • To strengthen training capacity of civic education organisations
  • To introduce non-violent methods of conflict resolutions in communities
  • To monitor violence
  • To strengthen partner organisations
