Column 18th amendment

I do not share the euphoria in opposition circles about the 18th amendment, which went through both houses of parliament in record time last week. Some of the more enthusiastic MDC officials have hailed this rare show of unity between the opposition and the ruling Zanu (PF) as a triumph.

Why is it that African leaders feel nothing for ordinary Africans? Have power, prestige and money isolated and insulated them from the suffering of their people? Why is it that they will go to such extreme lengths to side with their fellow leaders? No matter how corrupt, no matter how cruel – African leaders will never condemn their fellows.

The news that Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander, Constantine Chiwenga, and Air Force chief, Perence Shiri, were booed by junior soldiers at the Army's central Harare barracks this week is good news indeed.
The military supremos were heckled when they tried to convince disbelieving soldiers that the hardships being experienced in the military were caused by sanctions imposed by Britain and USA.

Zimbabwe’s state media has been agog this week with salacious stories and photos of Mugabe’s arch-critic Archbishop Pius Ncube – the brave cleric who has been at the forefront of civil society’s criticism of his regime’s human rights abuses and economic excesses.

Dutch-based ZimbabweWatch makes a strong statement with ‘Living museum’
The demonstration, organised by the Dutch-based NGO ZimbabweWatch, drew specific attention to Zimbabwean Minister of Environment and Tourism, Mr. Francis Nhema, who is attending the 14th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in The Hague.

UN Security Council must refer Zimbabwe Evictions to International Criminal Court
The Zimbabwe governments' mass eviction campaign, Operation Murambatsvina, was a crime against humanity and could be referred to the International Criminal Court by the United Nations Security Council.

Mbeki’s fulfilment of his mandate from the SADC leaders to sort out the mess in Zimbabwe is proceeding at a snail’s pace. Meanwhile the clock is ticking. Elections are due in 11 months. Zanu (PF) has already indicated that they might rush these ahead from March to January 2008.
