This report is an independent assessment of the issues and challenges of coltan mining in and around the Kahuzi-Biéga National Parc (KBNP), located in the East of the DRC, based on interviews with a variety of officials, NGOs and individuals in the DRC concerned or associated with the exploitation of the KBNP's coltan resources. It rejects a complete ban on (illegal) coltan mining - as it is often the only available livelihood left for many rural communities - and looks at possibilities to facilitate the integration of coltan mining and the conservation of the KBNP and the eastern lowland gorilla.
