Samenvatting This report looks at the socio-economic situation on the Copperbelt in Zambia and the issue of corporate social responsibility (CSR). It further discusses the best practices in CSR by providing five cases representative of the global mining industry and assesses the CSR practices in the state-owned Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) and in the privatised mines. The report concludes that there has been a significant change in the approach to CSR issues between ZCCM and the newly privatised mines which have significantly reduced the levels of service provision. The report also raises eleven issues that require the attention of the various stakeholders: In this case Government, civil society, the church, the new mine owners and the communities in the Copperbelt towns. Companies need to meet the OECD standards and emulate international best practices. Also, the Government needs to raise public awareness of the OECD standards.
