The study describes the permitting legislation in Denmark and south Durban (Durban) and gives advice on how to get involved in the permitting process and how to influence the process in a positive way. The comparison between the Danish and a Durban permit is a direct result a follow up on a DN/SDCEA publication: A 2002 Snapshot: Comparison of Refineries in Denmark and south Durban. The intention of the study is not for one country to copy the other’s administration, but to discuss similarities and differences in order to achieve better environmental administration of industries. It is hoped that studies of this kind can help campaign for a better national and international legislation. The study examines permits for the Engen Refinery in south Durban and Statoil Refinery in Denmark.
