Samenvatting |
The 14 countries of the SADC (Southern African Development Community) get a bad deal. The trade environment in which they have to operate is hostile and heavily skewed in favour of Europe, North America and Japan. They are also burdened with a foreign debt situation that threatens to enslave them forever. The rich nations of the world are unwilling to discuss trade on a equal footing and debt cancellation, two of the measures that would enable SADC countries to start making their own money. So is there a way out? Some argue that the much-advertised NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa’s Development) will provide the solutions; many others are not at all sure.
This brochure explores these and related issues against the background of new trade negotiations between the European Union and SADC. The first section deals with SADC, with contributions from Takawira Mumvuma. The second chapter deals with trade (Paul Goodison, Ish Mafundikwa, David Sogge). The third chapter considers the issue of debt (Jubilee Research, Charity Musamba, Bram Posthumus, Neville Gabriel, Romilly Greenhil). The final chapter looks on two possible ways out of the crisis: from the top down (NEPAD) and from below (civil society), with contributions from Benedict Tembo, Oupa Lehulere, Glenda Daniels, Thabani Masuku.
