Due to high illiteracy rates and people’s inability to access or afford to buy print media, radio continues to be a very important information and communication outlet in Southern Africa. Despite the mushrooming private commercial and community radio throughout southern Africa, state-owned broadcasters continue to hold the monopoly on national coverage.

The Media Programme’s Broadcasting unit aims to increase access to information via the development of the radio sector and the use of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) in southern Africa. It provides support to a number of independent radio stations and umbrella organizations that provide a forum for exchange of ideas and experiences as well as training and technical support to its membership in the broadcasting sector.

Partner organisations

Example: Rádio Ecclésia
The main studio

Radio Ecclesia, a Catholic Church-owned radio station based in Luanda, Angola’s capital city, is an important partner for the Broadcasting unit. Radio Ecclesia continues to be the only truly independent radio station in Angola and is most listened to for its live, interactive, call-in programmes. Due to the state’s unwillingness to reform its broadcasting laws, Radio Ecclesia is only able to broadcast in Luanda.

With NiZA’s support, in collaboration with a consortia of other donors, Radio Ecclesia broadcasts nationally several hours a day via short wave and is installing transmitters and using satellite technology to expand its FM reception throughout the country.
Training for young journalists

Journalists and technicians in different regions have been trained to produce radio programmes. Unfortunately to date, the government of Angola is still blocking the expansion of Radio Ecclesia to the provinces, denying the Angolan population access to an independent source of information.
