NiZA Approach

Solidarity 'new style'

NiZA’s general objective is the advancement of democratic processes in the southern African region, in order to contribute to structural poverty reduction. NiZA’s aim is to strengthen civil society by stimulating empowerment of organisations and individuals.

NiZA’s activities are concentrated in three thematic programmes:

  • Human Rights and Conflict Prevention
  • Media and Freedom of Expression
  • Socio-economic Empowerment

NiZA Programmes are a coherent totality of personnel assistance, linking and twinning, lobby and public awareness raising activities. The contacts with partner organisations are the foundations of the NiZA Programmes.

    NiZA Approach
All three NiZA Programmes work according to the folling principles:
  • Partner organisations in the region have ownership of the personnel assistance projects and of lobby, public awareness and advocacy issues.
  • The NiZA Programmes concentrate on the empowerment of civil society by explicitly supporting regional collaboration and capacity building.
  • Lobby and advocacy is initiated and carried out in consultation with partners in southern Africa, and in collaboration with northern organisations.
  • The NiZA Programmes provide input for awareness raising activities in the Netherlands in order to increase support for southern Africa.

Each NiZA Programme focuses on a number of clearly defined political objectives, all connected by the overall drive to strengthen civil society and democratic processes in southern Africa.

Sector Plan
An important element of each Programme is the ‘Sector plan’. As a member of PSO (thirty-member organisation for Personnel Assistance; financed by the Dutch ministry of Foreign Affairs) NiZA has developed a Sector plan for the Media Programme and plans to do so for the Human rights Programme.
