| Abstract |
This retrospective mortality survey, carried out in the municipality of Xa-Muteba, province of Lunda Norte, has found the levels of mortality amongst children under- five years of age way above the thresholds defining health emergencies. Even if the end of the war has allowed the government and international agencies to reach rural areas which were previously inaccessible, little improvement can be seen in terms of infrastructure, and availability of medical staff and supplies. As a result, conditions remain appalling.
