Mandela Lecture

The first Mandela Lecture was held on the 19th June 2003 in the New Church, Amsterdam, on the initiative of the Netherlands institute for Southern Africa (NiZA).

By courtesy of Mr. Nelson Mandela and the ANC, the world exclusive right to organise lectures under the name of Mandela Lecture was granted as a farewell gift to NiZA by Mr. Carl Niehaus on his resigning as Ambassador of South Africa to the Netherlands, in appreciation of NiZA’s support of many decades’ standing to the anti-apartheid struggle.

The Mandela Lectures will be given in the Netherlands and derive their inspiration from the thought of Mr. Mandela, as expressed in the broad theme, Peace and Reconciliation: Bridging the Gaps and Uniting Different Communities.

Mandela Lecture 2003

The first Mandela Lecture was delivered by Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa, former trade union leader and ANC Secretary-General. During the transition period that led up to the first democratic elections of April 1994, Mr. Ramaphosa was the leading negotiator for the ANC in its talks with the apartheid regime.
He was named as one of the most likely successors to Mr. Mandela as President. At present Mr. Ramaphosa presides the Board of a South African based international industrial group.
